More Than Seven Ways To Combat Back To Work Blues. December 22 2015

Back at work and wondering what just happened? We understand. But we do salute you for putting off your return for so long. And while coffee might be a very temporary distraction from your stark reality, we’ve got a few quick tips that might help you ease back into the working week. We’ve found them to be pretty effective, that failing you will at least kill ten minutes painlessly

ONE: Get in to work early

 

That’s right. You heard us. As hard as the mornings are after a solid few consecutive sleep-ins, getting in early will help you get on top of all the things that have banked up while you were away. From life admin to those emails that crept in while you were attending Christmas lunches, those precious moments of silence before everyone else arrives is a perfect time to tackle your inbox and pay off your credit cards. To begin with this may cause pain, but the shock of it all will subside after a few very productive days.

TWO: Make a future plan

What’s the point of earning money if you have nothing fun to spend it on? That’s why we work after all! So start getting out that list of resolutions, there is sure to be something on it that you can plan. Whether a a health retreat, reconnecting with old friends on a weekend away, an overseas trip or exploring a great new restaurant, take the time on your lunch break to lock something in that you can look forward to. Make it more real by printing out some inspo, or maybe just get stuck into insta and pintrest to help your plan take shape. In our experience, a future plan helps move through those long first post holiday hours.

THREE: Start working

That’s right. Stop talking and start trying to remember those pesky passwords that are going to be a barrier to the day kicking off. Once you are through the best way to begin is knocking off the easy things first. Might sound really simple, but a full inbox and a list of things to do (did we say life admin!) can be seriously overwhelming for a post holiday brain. Start deleting all of the things that require a quick read and no action. Then delete. Flag anything that actually requires you to do something. And start writing a list. You can prioritise those later. Before you know it your stomach will be rumbling and it’s time to get lunch.

FOUR: Food

 

Nourish that sleepy brain with as much coffee and virtuous food types like salad, fruit, veggies or maybe even a juice. Don’t be too hard on yourself day one though, it’s bad enough just being at work without having to worry about a diet too. So you have found something moderately satisfying to eat. Now back to work before you start getting tired.

FIVE: Take action

Now is the time to really get stuck into the list of actions. Start with the easy things first, but be sure to knock off a couple of the harder ones too. This list will grow tomorrow – there is no escape. Physically cross things off the list as you go. Nothing like finishing the day feeling that you actually accomplished something.

SIX: Create a work goal

In the first couple of days formulating a work goal might be all too much. Unless you already had one prepared, then it’s just a matter of acting on it. For the majority of you, being back at work will remind you exactly of what you need to do to get where you need to be. Once you’re through those first couple of days, start formulating a plan to make your work goal come to life. If it’s coffees with potential hiring leaders, finding a mentor, chatting to peers, tweaking your LinkedIn profile or getting onto SEEK, now is as good a time as any. It’s the New Year after all.

SEVEN: Home time

 

Given how difficult those first couple of days are, we recommend taking it easy – don’t take work home. Do some exercise, get organized at home and nurture your off duty self. You have a big year ahead; you just need to get through these next couple of days.
